Why Do We Get Sick?
Our
health care system here in the US, which is made up of 3
major industries - the medical community, the large pharmaceutical
companies, and the insurance companies, is entirely based
on your getting sick.
Nothing actually happens until you either contract a disease
or are worried that you have a disease. The entire system
is based upon detection and treatment - the concept of prevention
is rarely discussed and when it is, usually it is in the
context of avoiding a life threatening situation or the
recurrance of a life threatening situation. So what the
Go'Fer is saying here is that the system allows you to get
sick and is not set up in any way to prevent you from getting
sick.
Understanding
the system is the first step, because if you understand
that trillions of dollars are being made insuring you against
illness and then allowing you to get sick and treating your
illness, you will quickly realize that the only person on
the planet who can do something about your health and the
PREVENTION of illness and disease is YOU! Nobody else cares.
Now we make that as a general statement - of course people
care about their spouses and their children - but think
about this... If there really were a general caring about
health, would tobacco products be available? would we serve
alcohol to people and allow them to get into their vehicles?
So
What's a Person to Do?
Once
you realize that you are responsible for your own well-being
(not your doctor), the first step is to understand what
we are up against these days to stay well. The human body
is designed to be self-maintaining. As a machine, our bodies
are self diagnosing and self curing - BUT, and here's the
kicker, only when it is working properly. This is a truly
magnificent thing almost beyond comprehension in its complexity.
At the risk of oversimplifying, we are going to lump illnesses
into two general categories - infectious disease and degenerative
disease. These are the two things that our bodies must defend
against every day. To ward off infectious disease, we have
a complex defense system called the Immune System. Our immune
systems essentially wage war against invaders from the world
we live in. Degenerative disease is really not well understood.
It is more than just a wearing out of structures and organs.
It is a decline in the ability of our body to regenerate
the tissues and systems as easily as it did in our younger
days. When the life expectency was only 40 or 50 years -
there was very little degenerative disease. Now as the life
expectency continues to increase, we see a comensurate increase
in the amount of degenerative disease.
However,
in the case of either infectious or degenerative disease,
there is one thing that is true - we cannot hope to prevent
these conditions unless we provide what the body needs to
do its job. At Green Go'Fer Health, we firmly believe that
the quality of our lives and the number of years we are
around can be increased by putting the right things into
our body and developing some healthy habits.
What
is Everyday Health?
Everyday
health is the Go'Fer's term for preventative health care.
As the name suggests, it is something we participate in
every single day - OK, if you miss a day, you just pick
it up the next day. We don't want to sound threatening,
but if you do not follow some of the Go'Fer's guidelines,
you are headed for a life that gets increasingly less joyful
and filled with medication and surgery - both of which tend
to have negative side effects - and things will continue
to go downhill as you get older. Remember - the best the
medical community is going to do is encourage you to detect
your problems early; they don't talk about avoiding the
problems.
So
what we are trying to accomplish? Essentially four things
1)
Reduce our total body weight to healthy levels and maintain
it.
2) Develop daily habits that promote
wellness - eating habits, exercise, other.
3) Provide nutritional elements necessary to maintain
a healthy immune system.
4) Provide nutritional elements to support regeneration
of organs, tissues, & systems.
5) Provide as much defense against the aggregate toxicity
of our environment as possible.
Key
Information to Start with:
The
Go'fer has a few key statements that are the basis for
preventative health care. They are not complicated; they
make a lot of sense. In fact, they are so simple that
you might be tempted to dismiss them - DON'T! If you haven't
heard this from your doctor - there's a reason...your
doctor, the pharmaceutical companies and the health insurance
companies DO NOT MAKE ANY MONEY UNLESS YOU GET SICK OR
ARE WORRIED ABOUT GETTING SICK. They all have trillions
of reasons to allow you to get sick - they are in the
business of detecting and treating illness, not in the
business of preventing illness. Here are our basic premises
for disease prevention:
1)
Until
your body gets the nutrition it needs, you will feel hungry!
2)
Your
immune system is losing the war against disease!
3) All of the food we eat, even the "healthy stuff",
is mineral deficient!
4) We have to regenerate faster than we degenerate!
5) Regular daily exercise is NOT an option!
The
following represents the Green Go'Fer program for making
yourself as healthy as possible, warding off infectious
disease or quickly recovering if you contract one, and
postponing the effects of degenerative disease for as
long as possible. This is our program; it is our opinion.
We know that it works because we ourselves have followed
it and encouraged others to do the same. We know the pitfalls
because we've fallen into them. Our program requires that
you spend money on various products and we have links
to those product pages. We've hand picked these products
because we know they work and we know they work because
we have taken them and in many instances continue to take
them on a daily basis. None of the information contained
here or anywhere else in this website has been reviewed
by the FDA and neither the information nor the products
are intended to diagnose, prevent, treat, or cure any
disease.
Goals/Behavior/Attitude
We
talk about this throughout this website. Any program
dealing with your health begins and ends with you. Your
willingness to go through periods of discomfort, persevering
when you don't want to, will always make the difference
between your success or your return to unhealthy habits.
You have got to want it! You have got to believe that
sticking to the program is going to help you live a
longer life and that those years will be healthy and
happy. The first 3-4 weeks are critical and likely to
cause the most discomfort - you might even feel like
you are getting sick as toxins stored in your body are
released and circulated so your body can get rid of
them. You should commit to at least 90 days - that's
usually long enough to reverse the cycle of illness
and disease and have you noticeably feeling more energetic
and healthy. In the words of the late Jim Valvano, basketball
coach for the North Carolina State Wolf Pack, "Don't
give up; don't ever, ever give up!"
Some
Bad Habits
We'll
keep this as short and sweet as possible - DON'T SMOKE TOBACCO
PRODUCTS. If you are smoking, quit! There is nothing you
could do that is more toxic than sucking tobacco smoke into
your body - you are killing yourself.
Do whatever it takes to stop. If you can avoid alcohol as
well it's a plus. Alcohol is also a toxin and it is eliminated
from the body by your liver. Unfortunately your liver has
more to do than just eliminate alcohol. It's job is to filter
impurities and toxins out of the blood. If you make it work
too hard to eliminate the alcohol, it can't do the rest
of its job.
Both
alcohol and tobacco create dependencies - physical, psychological,
and emotional. Ultimately it is the chemistry that makes
the dependency and habits are built around them as well
as peer pressure, social surroundings, stress level. It
takes roughly 3 weeks to break an old habit and build a
new one. It will take 6 months to a year or longer to repair
the physiological damage done by constant tobacco or alcohol
usage. Today would be a good day to stop.
Fighting
the Toxins
In
the Weight Loss section
of our site we talk about Cleansing
Products, supplements that you can use periodically
to remove unwanted substances and toxins from your body.
It is very important to the maintenance of overall health
and well-being to cleanse and detox on a regular basis.
The Go'Fer recommends that it be done 4 times a year (but
at least twice). We have another product that is easy to
use and works while you sleep. You may have seen them advertised
on TV - the Detoxing Foot Patches.
Based on Chinese herbal medice and reflexology, these patches
are attached to your feet with adhesive pads and, while
you sleep, they draw toxins out of your body at the point
of contact. They truly work and are very easy to use.
Managing
your Weight
We
are not going to say a lot about weight loss and weight
management on this page of the site either. We have an entire
section of the website devoted to this area of preventative
health care. You can learn a lot about it in the Weight
Loss section.
What
we will say is that people in the US are generally fat -
we decided to use the term fat rather than overweight or
carry a few extra pounds because FAT is more offensive.
We have made a sport out of overeating. We invented the
concept of all you can eat buffet restaurants. We practice
gluttony as a religion. Frankly, it's disgusting. And it's
just another bad habit - we don't know when to stop eating.
Part
of this epidemic of obesity is because we are not eating
the right things and, as the Go'Fer points out, if we are
not giving the body what it needs to function properly,
we will continue to feel hungry. I heard a statistic that
is simply staggering - every day, in the US alone, 50,000,000
cans of Pepsi Cola are consumed. 50 MILLION cans - and that's
just regular Pepsi and Pepsi is the #2 cola. Each 12 oz.
can of Pepsi contains about 5 teaspoons of sugar and a teaspoon
is roughly 30 grams. Do the math here - 1.5 billion grams
of sugar from Pepsi Cola. How much is that? Well it's 3.3
million pounds or 1,650 tons of refined sugar. JUST from
PEPSI. And we wonder why children are being diagnosed with
diabetes or being prediabetic before they get out of their
teen years. We wonder why glucose meters are being advertised
on TV like cell phones in your favorite color. How much
money is going to be made if the medical community and the
big pharmaceutical companies can treat 60% of the population
for 80% of their lives for a condition like diabetes. There
is no profit in prevention and there is no profit in cure.
OK
- that little tirade fits nicely into the next topics. Since
the maintenance of our health is clearly our own responsibility,
what do we have to do to get things in order.
What
are we eating these days?
It's
probably better to title this section - What are we NOT
eating these days - or How are we eating these days. In
1936, the USDA (Department of Agriculture) released a report
stating that the soil on American farms was dangerously
low in mineral content - minerals that are needed in the
diet for proper body function. Since our bodies cannot make
minerals, and since nothing has been done by the farming
community or the chemical companies to restore minerals
to the soil, it is safe to assume that all of us have spent
our entire lives or darn close to it with mineral deficient
diets reducing the efficiency of our body function (many
of these minerals are co-factors in bodily functions) and
seriously compromising our immune systems.
Add
to that our crazy, irregular eating habits - obsession with
"fast food" - reliance on sugar and other simple
carbohydrates for quick energy - metabolic peaking and crashing
from that fast energy fix - love affair with fried foods
and saturated fats - and we have the recipe for the plague
of the 21st century. The plague has several components.
Overweight - High Blood Pressure - High Cholesterol - High
Blood Sugar. Other than the overweight part, is it any surprise
that each of the other three elements can be and are being
treated with long term prescription medication in increasing
doses. And should the conditions evolve into heart issues
- it's nothing a short stay in the hospital and some surgery
can't fix temporarily. Diabetes - just move to insulin.
Cancer - Surgery, Radiation, and Chemotherapy. And just
to cement the deal - let's use the increasing occurance
of these conditions to predict the increase in the occurance
of these conditions. But let's not do anything to change
the root cause of the condition - much of which can be traced
to our own daily habits. Oh - and if all else fails - blame
genetics. Simply remove every shred of responsibility from
the patient and make poor health an expectation and an inevitability.
THAT'S
SIMPLY INSANE! You can make a difference. You can change
the odds. You are in charge of your own health and well
being. And it's never too late to start doing something.
Well I guess there are times when it appears to be too late,
but if you are reading this page - it isn't too late for
you!
Energy/Exercise
Oh
boy - Exercise - one of the Go'Fer's favorite topics. One
of the problems with exercise is that we have this notion
that an exercise program is a painful, time consuming event
where we have to exhaust ourselves or sweat our behinds
off. That's simply not true and is more of an excuse not
to exercise than anything else. Why
exercise? Two reasons! First reason - exercise raises the
heart rate and blood pressure; it makes you use your lungs
to get oxygen into your body; and it puts stress on your
muscular system. The body's response to stress on the muscular
system is to build more muscle. That brings us to the second
reason - the only place that fuel is burned by the body
for energy is in the mitochodria in muscle cells. The more
you exercise, the more fuel you burn and the more muscle
you build. The more muscle there is, the more fuel you are
capable of burning - like getting a bigger furnace to manage
your weight. Our body functions better when we force it
to work - we are designed for things to flow. When things
sit around is when the problems start. Circulatory system
and digestive sytem work best when stuff is moving through
and nothing gets things moving like exercise. Nervous system
works better and your endocrine system will start to produce
hormones that make you feel good - some of the most powerful
"drugs" on the planet are the hormones produced
in the human brain - exercise promotes positive results;
lethargy promotes negative results.
But
what kind of exercise are we talking about? Well there's
nothing wrong with going to the gym and spending 30 minutes
on a treadmill or jogging or riding a bike of taking a step
aerobics class - but let's get to the bottom line. If you
made yourself take a brisk 30 minute walk every day, you
would be exercising and, especially if you aren't
doing anything now, that would do you a world of good. 45
minutes would be even better. Just force yourself to do
it until it becomes a habit - usually about 3 weeks. If
you miss a day, just start again the next day. That's all
it takes. As it gets easier, all you need to do is to pick
up your pace and start walking up some hills. You'll feel
the difference in a few weeks - take your time - do what
you can and then push yourself to do a little more each
day.
Eating
for your Health and Supplementing
If
you have gotten this far in your reading, this section will
make a lot of sense. Just eating sensibly; just eating so-called
healthy foods; limiting your portions; snacking on dried fruit
and nuts and seeds; will not do the trick. Even if you eat only
certified organically grown produce and organically grown livestock
is not going to be enough. That's just the way it is. If you
want to live as long as possible in the best condition possible,
you will have to take supplements. Depending upon your age,
your gender, your current health condition - these supplements
can vary. In this section we are going to talk about what we
believe everyone should, at a minimum, be adding to their diet
every single day. We don't want you to be choking down 50 pills
and capsules two or three times a day. We want to make it manageable
so that you will continue to do it.
You
are going to have to spend your money to supplement your diet,
because although your health insurance will underwrite the cost
of your prescription drugs, we don't know of any program that
will underwrite the cost of your supplements. Of course the
cost that you pay for getting that benefit from the insurance
companies is that you have to develop the illness first.
We
strongly recommend that at a minimum you take some nutritional
supplements every day. Our reasoning here is that regardless
of your diet, it is unlikely that the food you are eating is
providing the necessary nutrition that your body needs - especially
minerals. And remember our comment at the beginning of this
discussion - that you will continue to feel hungry until your
body gets the nutrition it needs. If the body isn't getting
enough from the food you eat, and the food is the only source
you use for nutrition, well - you are going to eat and eat and
eat and still be hungry - all that will happen is that you will
gain weight and fat.
We
don't sel a lot of products at Green Go'Fer Health and it is
likely that we will decrease the number of products over time.
There's a good reason for this - we don't sell anything that
we don't take or that we haven't tried. We stand behind the
products we sell and we rarely if ever will sell more than one
product in a particular category - we are not a supermarket
for nutritional products. We have taken the time to make choices
on your behalf through years and years of experience and trial
and error. We are going to talk about 4 products - Overall Nutrition,
Essential Fatty Acids, Full Spectrum Minerals, and a unique
product that has no real category.
We
also recommend that you take a mineral supplement. For this
we recommend Coral Calcium and specifically we have a product

In
the world of nutrition, the term "essential" has a
very specific meaning. It means that your body cannot synthesize
that nutrient from other nutrients - it must be directly ingested
and absorbed. Minerals are essential nutrients. Some amino acids
are also essential. And Essential Fatty Acids must be ingested.
The best source for essential fatty acids are fish oils particularly
from cold water fish such as salmon or fish that live deep in
the ocean. The problem many people have is that fish oil products
- well - they taste fishy and that fishy taste has been known
to cause some burping and the repeat of the bad taste.
The
last product that we think everyone should consider is relatively
new on the market but shows amazing promise for health maintenance
and for assisting with health issues. The product is called
StemEnhance. There has been
a great deal of media controversy around the morality of doing
research with embryonic stem cells - the cells that form in
a developing human embryo and then differentiate themselves,
multiply, and develop in the many different organs and tissue
types in a human being. The process defies description.
What
has been lost in the media's rush to present controversial topics
is some very relevent information on Stem Cells. As an embryo
develops, it soon becomes a fetus. Once the developing baby
becomes a fetus, it still produces stem cells only from this
point forward and until the day we die, those stem cells are
called Adult Stem Cells. They still have all the same properties;
they are capable of differentiating into any cell type in the
human body; they are capable of multiplying as that cell type;
and they are believed to be the primary renewal and repair mechanism
in our bodies. These cells are produced in the bone marrow and
reseach has been done where a person's own stem cells are "harvested"
from their bone marrow and them injected either directly into
a distressed organ or into an artery feeding a distress organ
with remarkable results. No controversy, a painful procedure,
but incredible stories of recovery - all documented in the medical
research. It seems that adult stem cells are attracted to distressed
areas of the body where they change into the appropriate tissue
type and multiply. This is probably how a cut heals. As we age,
the adult stem mechanism becomes weaker and slows down - production
of and circulation of the adult stem cells diminishes. This
is where StemEnhance comes into
the picture.
StemEnhance
is an aquabotanical - a plant that lives in water, fresh water
in this case. The plant contains a bacterium call aphanizomenon
flos-aquae,
and this bacterium when ingested causes a rise in the adult
stem cell output in the bone marrow and in circulation by as
much as 30%. This has been fully documented in the literature,
and the summary of findings is available on this website. Because
this is a nutritional product, we are prohibited by the FDA
of making any health claims regarding this product. We are also
encouraged by the manufacturer not to share any stories of people
who have used the product. What we will say is that based upon
adult stem cell research and research with the Aphanizomenon
flos-aquae
bacterium is that StemEnhance
can increase your own adult stem cell production. This would
be of particular interest to athletes looking to improve their
recovery times and ability to perform, anyone wanting to maintain
optimum health with an active lifestyle, and persons with specific
health challenges as an alternative to or in additon to convential
treatments. StemEnhance also
comes in StemEquine (for horses) and StemPets (for dogs) and
the last time I checked, animals don't lie about their health.
